The history of independent Latin America can be summarized in two concepts: balkanization and neo-colonial order.
Latin Americans not only fail to unite following the ideas of some great figures of the subcontinent, as Bolívar and San Martín, but we can not avoid the balkanization: the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata was split into four countries, of New Granada came two , Mexico lost half its territory to the U.S., the Captaincy General of Guatemala and Cuba broke into pieces.
In the nineteenth century accepted the international division of labor, organize the export of primary products, and we integrate "informally" to the British Empire.
In the twentieth century we became the "backyard" of the new imperial power. Together
suffered military coups, repression and dictatorship. Together we support the neoliberal tsunami of '90, who broke the social fabric of our societies increasing in dramatic terms the gap between rich and poor.
Fortunately, something is changing in this century. New leadership and new ideas have emerged in our countries.
At first glance, there is nothing that one, look very different ... what seem Mujica and Chavez, Morales and Dilma Cristina and Lula, and Ollanta Correa, Nestor and Lugo? ... Probably nothing ... And yet ...
Across the continent is an interest in ensuring that democracy truly represents all the people. Across the continent are trying to reach a mature relationship with the world powers, which avoid the extremes of slavish submission and teenage rebellion. In the entire area is looking to neighboring giving more importance to the similarities that unite us than differences that divide us. And we're making great things.

Each country has found a different solution. Each one has built a political force that is a real pop of that society. Evo could never win an election in Uruguay; Mujica could never do in Bolivia. Are in place from which they emerged, to which they belong.
And yet, despite these differences, we are achieving unity in diversity, build together while preserving and respecting our differences. No small feat.
The unity of Latin America now seems an achievable goal.
And very necessary. Because the world
XXI century will have great economic powers, for its territory, population, or both, have continental dimensions: China, United States, Europe, India, Russia ...
Here in Latin America only Brazil can play in that championship. But to compete with the potential need for a greater support base. Brazil needs of Latin America ... Needs of Brazil and Latin America.
Almost all countries of the subcontinent, the change has begun.
Each one of us, from your country, you should make a contribution. We have to vote for the consolidation and deepening of these changes. We must prevent this nefarious past back.
